Are you waiting for an escape plan from this world?
In this study, we dive deep into 1 Thessalonians 4 to discover what the “Rapture” really means.
THE RAPTURE
Millions of Christians are waiting.
They are watching the skies, waiting for a secret sign, expecting a trumpet blast that will suddenly lift them away, leaving their clothes, their problems, and the world behind.
They call it “The Rapture.”
But what if this expectation keeps you waiting for a future that keeps promising what the present already offers?
In doing so, you miss a reality that is already here.
We have been taught to see the Rapture as an escape plan.
A rescue mission to save us from a dying world.
But God doesn’t want to take you out of the world; He wants to reveal His glory in you, here, now, in the midst of it.
The Bible says we will be caught up in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air.
1 Thessalonians 4:17
We will be caught up in the clouds
to meet the Lord in the air.
But have we been reading this with carnal eyes?
Because God is Spirit, and throughout Scripture, He uses natural images to reveal spiritual truths.
So let’s unlock the mystery of the Rapture.
It is not about leaving the earth.
It is about leaving the flesh.
DE WOLKEN & DE LUCHT
Paul writes that we will be caught up together in the clouds.
1 Thessalonians 4:17
We will be caught up in the clouds
to meet the Lord in the air.
In the Bible, clouds are never just weather.
In Exodus, the cloud represented the visible presence and glory of God filling the Tabernacle.
Exodus 40:34
In Hebrews, we read of a great cloud of witnesses.
Hebrews 12:1
And in Jude, false teachers are called clouds without water.
Jude 1:12
A cloud is water; water that has been lifted up from the earth to the heavens.
Water consistently pictures the Word.
You are the earth.
When the water of the Word washes you, and the fire of the Spirit touches you, you ascend! Your perspective is lifted.
You become a cloud, carrying God’s glory.
So being “caught up in the clouds” is not about leaving the planet.
It describes a mind that has been raised from earthly thinking—the realm of the flesh—into heavenly thinking—the realm of the Spirit.
And then Paul says we meet the Lord in the air.
1 Thessalonians 4:17
We will be caught up in the clouds
to meet the Lord in the air.
Here is a profound contrast.
Ephesians 2 tells us that we used to live according to the prince of the power of the air— the spirit who is now at work in the sons of disobedience.
Ephesians 2:2
…. in which you once walked
according to the prince of the power of the air,
the spirit who is now at work in the sons of disobedience.
But Romans 12 verse 2 calls us to be transformed, by the renewing of our mind.
Romans 12:2
Be transformed by the renewing of your mind.
When your mind is renewed, the atmosphere changes.
You no longer meet ‘the prince of the power’ in the air.
You meet the Lord in the air.
It is breathing a different atmosphere.
Receiving a different breath: no longer the spirit who is at work in the sons of disobedience, but the Pneuma, the Spirit of God.
DE KOMST (PAROUSIA)
You might ask, “But doesn’t Jesus come down to get us?”
Let’s look at the word Paul uses for “coming.”
It is the Greek word Parousia (παρουσία).
Parousia emphasizes presence rather than movement.
Parousia doesn’t mean a movement from point A to point B.
It literally means: Presence.
What Jesus said in Matthew 24:27 has been translated as follows in most Bible translations:
Matthew 24:27
As the lightning comes from the east and shines even unto the west,
so will be the coming of the Son of Man.
Here too, the word parousia appears in the original text.
So it is not so much about the coming of the son of man.
It is about the presence of the son of man becoming visible.
The word translated as “lightning” is the Greek word astrape (ἀστραπή).
However, Astrape refers to bright shining, like the sun.
The sun rises in the East and shines to the West, gradually filling the sky.
It is not a sudden crash.
It is a dawning.
A light increasing in clarity and visibility.
So…
Isaiah 60:1-2
Arise, shine, for your light has come,
and the glory of the Lord rises upon you.
For behold, darkness covers the earth,
and thick darkness is over the peoples;
but the Lord will rise upon you,
and His glory will appear over you.
The Second Coming is not Jesus coming down on a physical cloud to check your ticket.
It is the Parousia, the presence, of your true identity, your anointing (Christ = Anointed One), which becomes fully visible in you.
It is the unveiling, the Apokalupsis, of the Son of God in His temple.
And you are that temple!
Colossians 1:27 says it clearly: Christ IN YOU is the hope of glory.
Colossians 1:27
Christ in you is the hope of glory.
The world is waiting to see Jesus come through the clouds of the sky, but creation is actually groaning and waiting for the revealing of the Sons of God.
Romans 8:19
The earnest expectation of the creation eagerly waits for the revealing of the sons of God.
They are waiting to see Him revealed in YOU.
DE OPHEFFING VAN DE ZOON
We see this “Rapture” perfectly pictured in Revelation 12.
Revelation 12:5
A woman gave birth to a son, a male child,
and her child is caught up to God and His throne.
This is not a story about the past; it is a prophecy about your spiritual growth.
The WOMAN is your soul.
The CHILD is the birth of sonship within you—Christ in you.
This child, your sonship, is caught up.
The word used is harpazo (ἁρπάζω)—the same word Paul uses in Thessalonians.
This happens when your life is no longer governed by the flesh, but by the Spirit.
Romans 8:6
For the mindset of the flesh is death,
but the mindset of the Spirit is life and peace.
Your body remains on earth—walking, working, speaking.
But your life is governed from the throne.
You have been seated with Him in the heavenly realms.
Ephesians 2:6
You are in the world, but not of the world.
John 17:11+14
You have been raptured—not from the planet, but out of the grip of the flesh, out of the slavery of Egypt, and brought into the Kingdom of God.
So stop waiting to die to go to heaven.
Stop waiting for a rescue plan that removes you from the earth.
God doesn’t want to abandon the earth!
John 17:15
I do not pray that You should take them out of the world,
but that You should keep them from evil.
He wants to fill it with His glory—through you!
Numbers 14:21
All the earth shall be filled with the glory of the Lord!
The trumpet is not reserved for the future.
It is the voice of the Spirit calling you upward, right now.
Revelation4:1
Come up here!
Leave the lowlands of carnal thinking.
Colossians 3:2
Leave the identity of Adam.
Ephesians 4:22
Ascend the mountain of the Lord.
Psalm 24:3
Meet Him in the Spirit.
1 Corinthians 3:16
Become that cloud of witnesses.
Hebrews 12:1
The Rapture is real.
But it is far more powerful than you have ever been told!
It is the rising of the Son of God - in you!
